Watch on YouTube →

What does it take to rebuild your life after military service, a life-changing cancer diagnosis and the challenges of PTSD?

In Episode 83 of The Grey Man Podcast, Elaine "Burmese Princess" Gallagher shares her remarkable journey from serving 13 years in the Australian Army to facing cervical cancer, navigating a difficult military discharge and discovering a renewed sense of purpose through faith, fitness, boxing and photography.

Growing up in a Burmese migrant family in Perth, Elaine reflects on her parents’ sacrifices, her military career and the experiences that shaped her outlook on life. She opens up about being diagnosed with cervical cancer at 29, choosing to stay active through recovery and learning to embrace new opportunities rather than give up.

Elaine also discusses the challenges of transitioning out of Defence, navigating the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) claims process and discovering the impact of PTSD later in life.

After periods of depression and personal betrayal, Elaine began rebuilding her life by establishing stronger boundaries, reconnecting with faith and surrounding herself with positive people. Today, she is pursuing her passion for photography, supporting fellow veterans and encouraging others to recognise their potential.

In this episode, we discuss: • Elaine’s 13-year career in the Australian Army and her experiences on deployment • Surviving cervical cancer at 29 and choosing to live life to the fullest • The challenges of military discharge and transitioning to civilian life • PTSD, veteran wellbeing and navigating DVA claims • Finding purpose through boxing, fitness, adventure and photography • Faith, accountability, personal boundaries and rebuilding after setbacks • Why second chances matter and how veterans can support one another • The importance of positive communities, sharing opportunities and helping others succeed
